      Our foundations in the US

      Worldpay’s history actually starts with Vantiv. Back in 1971, Midwest Payment Systems (MPS) was formed by Fifth Third Bank in the United States, a provider of Electronic Funds Transfer to financial institutions. MPS evolved into Fifth Third Processing Solutions in 2003, and started growing by acquisition. In 2019, the company rebranded as Vantiv and began publicly trading on the New York Stock Exchange.

      Streamlining our operations

      In 1989, Streamline was launched by Royal Bank of Scotland, an electronic payments service focused on point-of-sale transactions. Streamline became one of the first companies to take internet payments, and in 2000 they pioneered one of the first eComm shopping carts.

      Entering the private equity space

      Streamline rebranded as Worldpay in 2010 to become the largest merchant acquirer in Europe, and one of the largest globally. Worldpay entered private equity space shortly after, and was listed on the London Stock Exchange in 2015.

      A united US and UK presence

      In 2017, Vantiv and Worldpay came together to form one ‘Worldpay’ — the number one global acquirer.

      Going global with FIS

      Worldpay was acquired by FIS in 2019 to create one of the world’s largest payment and financial technology companies.

      An independent company, working in partnership

      In 2024 Worldpay became an independent company, following a majority acquisition by private equity firm GTCR. Worldpay and FIS remain a long-term commercial partnership, maintaining a strong go-to-market bond to continue to bring the best services and solutions to clients worldwide.

    We offer nine global inclusion networks, creating spaces for everyone from our Hispanic + Latinx network and our Asian + Pacific Islander network, to our Women’s network, Working Families network and LGBTQ+ network. We also have 200+ global Culture Champions to help shape and embed our culture.
